The Biggest Challenges for Entrepreneurs

by Thomas Griffin

When I saw the January issue of Entrepreneur Magazine I was thrilled. Cover copy had a teaser on it to the effect that entrepreneurs had been surveyed and inside were their answers. I was certain that, finally, someone was paying attention to entrepreneurs who were striving for a successful business. It was time to hear from us little guys!

I can’t tell you how surprised I was as I began to read the article. Their idea of an “entrepreneur” and mine were as different as night and day. I always classified an entrepreneur as someone like the “Mom and Pop” coffee shop around the corner, the family run produce market in town, or the 18 to 24 year old who had come up with a fantastic “gizmo” and was scooped up into a corporation as their newest genius. Let me give you a quote from the article that will clue you into its idea of an “entrepreneur”.

To explain the method used for the survey they state, “Entrepreneur magazine and PricewaterhouseCoopers “Entrepreneurial Challenges Survey” is an annual telephone survey of more than 300 CEOs of privately held, U.S.-based businesses recognized for their sustained, rapid growth. They average $31.5 million in annual revenue with an average of 185 employees, and have an ongoing annual growth rate of more than 23 percent……”

That definitely was not my picture of an entrepreneur. I don’t know too many entrepreneurs who average $31.5 million annually, or employ 185 people. To me, that’s a pretty successful company on its way to being a corporation. We should all be such entrepreneurs!

At any rate, I continued reading and I must say the information was worth the read, and the business of doing business can apply to those of us who aren’t quite making that $31.5 million per year yet. Here’s what the survey discovered.

What were considered their biggest challenges for 2006?

* 73% - Retention of key workers * 38% - Developing new products/services * 36% - Expansion to domestic markets * 35% - Increased productivity * 28% - Upgrading technology * 23% - Creating business alliances * 21% - Better management of cash flow * 14% - Expansion outside the U.S. * 13% - Improving risk management * 11% - Finding new financing * 11% - Buying another company or launching a spinoff * 7% - Preparing company for sale * 2% - Going public

Now when you stop and think about it, that’s pretty much what most entrepreneurs think about each year. Maybe not to the extent of expanding to foreign markets or launching a spinoff, but to keep your business perking along the road of improvement - all the rest are considered.

The next part of the survey was interesting because entrepreneurs were given a list of several “wild-card” factors that could affect business in 2006. When asked which three would be most harmful to their business, here’s what they said:

* 47% - Unstable U.S. economy * 43% - Rising health-care costs * 41% - Shortage of qualified workers * 40% - Weak market demand * 24% - Rising oil/energy costs * 24% - Rising interest rates * 22% - New government regulations * 18% - Weaker capital spending * 14% - Weakening world economy * 12% - Increased global competition * 11% - Decreased access to capital * 10% - Sudden drop in U.S. real estate market * 10% - Tax increases * 9% - Inflation

So maybe my entrepreneurs and those surveyed are not really that much different in thinking. The outlook of most entrepreneurs is probably optimistic, or will be unless more unforeseen disasters strike.

Even after the huge devastation of 9/11, within two quarters we were back to the same level of optimism as we had before. People get used to dealing with tough circumstances and factor them in, but are not swayed by them. When you really think about it; isn’t that what most entrepreneurs are like?

If they’re not, then they aren’t entrepreneurs by my way of thinking.

Free Classifieds How to Set them Up

by Alex Wu

You probably know that the local paper does not offer free classifieds. The Internet does. There are many free classified advertisement web pages on the Internet. You can post most anything there that will help sell your product or service.

You can place many types of ads on the Internet free classified sites. They are open to all, and they usually have great results. This is often a better way to sell items for people who want to avoid fees as you would get from the local classifieds or on e-bay.

Free advertising through these classified ads can reach a large audience. People who do not get the paper, or even if they do, often go online to look at the Classifieds for better deals, it is also an easy way to find something that is needed.

When you decide to place a classified ad on the Internet, do your homework and find out which ones rank highest on the search engines. You can use Google Analytics for this, or just do web searches as if you were looking for something on the Internet classifieds. Once you get the results make a note of the top three results as these will be your most looked at classified ad websites. You should advertise on more than one.

When you are ready to place your ad, make sure that you write a good advertisement. Be brief, informative, and give a good description of what you are selling. Use an e-mail address rather than a phone number for a contact, as your phone number can be all over the web and you will receive calls you do not want.

Be precise in the method of payment that you require, and never send your item without payment first. PayPal and Money Orders are two methods that are good. If you accept checks make it clear that no item will be sent until the check clears. You have to protect yourself. There are people who are out to scam others just like anywhere else.

When you place your ad make sure it is clear, short, and gives a good brief description of what you have to offer. Adding a picture can help in some cases. Make sure that you describe you item honestly and include any flaws if there are any. A good description can mean a sale.

When you decide which free classified website to use, make sure that you read the terms of service for any fees that may not have been mentioned before, look for restrictions on the type of content they allow, and also how long you can expect your ad to run. Generally 7-10 days, some instances they can run up to 30 days. Do a bit of research, and you will find the place that is right for you.

BECOME A GOAL SETTER!

If you expect any level of success you must set goals. If you expect to be successful, you must determine what that means to you and the best way to achieve it. There are two basic steps you can take to convert goals into achievements: 1) You can decide on a specific dollar amount; and 2) You can set a time frame for obtaining the dollar amount you want. Your goal should be specific and indicate What, When, and Where. After making a list of every possible way you might accomplish a goal, select the method that best suits your situation.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS YOU MUST ASK YOURSELF

1) ‘How can I support my family while I build up by business?’ This question must be worked out according to each individual’ circumstances. Many people start out on a part-time basis after their regular jobs to see how much they can handle. Then when their incomes reach a certain level they will switch over and go full time.

2) ‘What are my abilities?’ To determine your abilities you will have to take an inventory of yourself. Decide what you enjoy doing the most and what you ‘feel’ you would be good at. Examine every possibility and include every skill you have no matter how slight.

3) ‘Is there a market for the produce of service I have chosen?’ Be cautious before you invest any money! Check it out by making inquiries directly to the company, competitors, or firms who are marketing a product similar to the one you are interested in. Test it on a small scale. Check it out thoroughly.

4) ‘How long will it take this business to reach the financial goal I must have?’ It’s really a question of knowing how much time you can dedicate to your business, and what your profits are for that time. From there, a little simple addition will tell you how long it might take to reach a particular financial goal.

SUCCESS IS HAVING THE COURAGE TO BEGIN!

Starting a business at home is a economical way to start a small business that can easily grow into a larger one. Many entrepreneurs have proven that you don’t need a huge manufacturing plant to develop a successful business. Some of the most successful businesses in existence today started in a spare room or garage. It isn’t how you start out that is important. What really matters is, do you have the courage to begin.

SELECTING THE RIGHT PRODUCT OR SERVICE

Take a close look at your interests and abilities, and then decide what type of marketing you want to do. For example, do you want to assemble items and sell them back to the manufacturer; do you want to sell directly to people; or would you prefer selling wholesale to retail outlets? If you prefer doing piecework or assembling items for manufacturers, make certain it’s something you enjoy working with. If you enjoy one-on-one-sales, then test the product out on your friends, relatives and neighbors. The object is to find out what has the most appeal.

DEVELOP A GOOD MARKETING TECHNIQUE

A good marketing technique is one part of a business plan that is absolutely essential to its success. In fact, the ability to properly market a product or service is actually more important than the product itself. Even an inferior product can be a financial success if marketed properly. Seek out the advice of everyone in your field. Explain your needs and ask them questions. Experience is the best teacher. With good advice and a salable product, you should be able to develop a winning marketing plan.

FINANCING YOUR HOME-BUSINESS VENTURE

The first place to look for financing is right at home. Take an inventory of items you don’t need and have a garage sale. Most people are pleasantly surprised a how much cash they can raise in a single weekend. Next, turn to members of your family or close friends who have faith in you and want to see you succeed. Offer to repay them through profit-sharing. Go to individuals in your community who believe in your personal worth. If you have a good credit history, your banker should consider you a good financial risk. Two other excellent sources would be your local Small Business Administration (SBA) and Chamber of Commerce.. SBA has low-interest loans available for qualified applicants and your Chamber of Commerce can assist you with referrals and other helpful information.

WORK-AT-HOME OPPORTUNITIES ARE EVERYWHERE!

Anyone who is serious about work-at-home opportunities need only look around them. There are thousands of options everywhere! There are employment opportunities that involve becoming an independent contractor; working on a commission basis; working for a salary; freelancing for pay; getting paid by the hour, receiving pay for each piece assembled; getting paid by the project, or a combination of any of the above. No doubt, what you finally decide on will depend on your particular needs and interests.

Biggest Slowdown Since 1929

by Don Bethune

Partially because of the rapid growth in telecommunications and Information Technology we have seen growth parameters including the GDP rising continuously during the 1990’s any beyond. While economic indicators are naturally cyclical, the recent sharp declines on the global scale have far exceeded the expectations of economic experts analysts. In Asia as well as Europe and the USA these declines have been the steepest since 1929.

This unfortunate and however remarkable incident has proved the need of redefining and re-strengthening the current financial chemistry. For instance the biggest bail out package, cuts in CRR up to 150 bps have proved itself insufficient to prevent the steep fall in stock indexes across different global exchanges.

For instance the experts comments over the fall of one of the largest banks in US the Lehman Brothers is said to be a calculated and well predicted with time. The policies, strategy, pay role to the employees, exposure to in-calculated field, mortgages over last decade clearly indicates a poor management and policies adopted by the company. If these were so much visible to the experts then why action were not take with time? similar kind of stories lies beneath the fall of other biggies too. These have made many investors, employees and IT companies to shut down the shop or making them bankrupt.

The question has to be asked as to what if anything financial institutions have learned from this experience. Will they accept the bailout packages and continue with business as usual or will they use this financial assistance to buy time enough to redefine and retool their business models? This would seem imperative if we are to experience solid and sustainable economic growth once again.

Major economic powers such as the USA and China have cooperated in trying to bolster their respective economies. It is apparent however that even if some successes are achieved, the real solution lies in cooperation with Europe and the other Asian economies if a true global recovery is to be achieved.

Financial rescue packages will not necessarily help the investor in the short term except perhaps to put a brake on the losses. Assuming it will take some time for financlial institutions and other affected organizations to get their houses in order, the investor must review his or her own investment strategies in hopes of regaining a pattern of sustainable growth.

Instead of finding out all these hook and crook at the time of turmoil political leaders of prosperous and responsible nations should sit together to decide strategies, which can prevent such collapses in future. IF incase these solutions doesn’t crop up from them then small investors should be careful while making any decision in putting their money in.

All to often when we read the news about the plunging stock market we may feel unaffected unless we ourselves are players in the market. What is not always so apparent is the slowdown in the economy, noticeable loss of jobs and lowering of wages resulting from loss of share values. The average citizen needs to be aware of the effects of what is going on in the marketplace on his or her own well being. The road to recovery isn’t just about saving major financial institutions but also about educating the average citizen about what this all can mean to him or her.

Copper Piping-Still Best for Plumbing and Heating Applications

by Tal Potishman

Industrial professionals, plumbers and most other machinist professionals in the United Kingdom list copper as the metal of choice for most fabrications. Historians can date the use of copper as far back as ten millennia and believe that only gold and iron were used before copper was discovered. The natural colour of Copper is red, though over time its colour can shift into green.

Professionals in the plumbing and heating industries have been using copper for their pipes and for a number of the electrical devices that help operate the heating and plumbing systems the professionals create. While copper has been used commonly for almost a century, copper miners have recently begun raising the price of the metal out of fear that the world’s available copper supply will not meet the demand.

In the United Kingdom, copper tubing has proved to be the most reliable piping for water distribution and natural gas distribution. Copper is considered to be the “quality standard” in the heating and plumbing industries and its use is accepted in all areas of construction and building. In addition to its strength and durability, copper is thought to stifle bacterial growth and help contribute to the healthfulness of larger organisms that make use of the metal in their homes and offices.

In the United Kingdom’s domestic plumbing industry, copper has been determined to be the most useful material. It does not deteriorate and it can resist corrosion all while carrying water as well as natural gas. Industry professionals have so much confidence in copper that clients who use it in their homes and offices are given a fifty year warranty on the devices that make use of the metal.

For heating systems, UK experts agree that radiant heating is one of the best systems that can be installed. Copper pipes have been used in underfloor heating for decades because the metal easily and evenly distributes heat and because copper pipes are unlikely to leak and cause damage to the structural integrity of the house. Underfloor heating is becoming increasingly popular in the UK because it is the most efficient and cost effective method of heating a home.

Copper has also proved very useful in cooling systems because it can distribute cool air as easily as it can warm air. Manufacturers have begun using copper in cooling units with massive success. Copper works to increase the lifetime of the machines as well as their effectiveness.

Copper is also known for being “green” friendly. This metal is easily recycled and resistant to germs and bacteria. Humans need copper to help create haemoglobin and the copper in a person’s system helps the body fight against high cholesterol levels and coronary heart disease.

3 Secrets on Home Based Business Marketing

by Thomas Griffin

Marketing is the part of business that no one seems to like. Perhaps that’s because it’s confusing and made to be even more confusing when you begin to read books on marketing and its applications to the business world. So, are there any secrets that actually work and that you can actually apply to your online business? The answer is yes. There are three home based business marketing secrets that you can keep in mind as you begin this adventure into running your own business - and as you become a success.

Less is More

One of the things that marketing professionals don’t tell you is that you really don’t need to do as much as you think you do. By simply adopting a strategy of telling as many people as you can, treating each customer with respect, and then repeating this cycle, that’s going to bring in a lot of new business. Word of mouth advertising may not get as much press as it once did, but it certainly still works when it comes to smaller home based businesses.

You also want to keep in mind that these marketing secrets don’t require a lot of time or a lot of money in order to be effective. Something as simple as adding your website address to your emails is just as effective as running a commercial on TV and a lot less expensive to implement. Think about smaller ways to spread the word instead of bigger ways. Target only the customers that have already shown interest in what you have to sell and you’re certain to market for success.

More is Less

You also want to remember that a customer on the internet these days is accustomed to seeing a lot of advertisements, so they know when they are being ’sold’ something. Instead of focusing your messages on sales exclusively, try bringing the customer information they can use - informational articles, etc.

When you put too many advertisements in outgoing emails or you simply push your company too much, you will turn off prospective customers. Even if they are interested in what you have to say, the more you talk to them about the same things, the more they’re going to wonder what the ‘catch’ is and why they should buy from you at all.

Recognize that your customers are smart and that they WILL respond to you, even if you don’t tell them about every sale or every feature for your products. You just don’t have to beat them over the head with what you want to sell them.

Use Your Home Based Appeal to Bring People to You

By adding a personalized touch to your marketing strategies, you will begin to pull in more customers, almost without trying. So often, online businesses forget that it’s their placement and location that allows them to be unique. Instead of downplaying the fact that you work from home, make sure that your customers know it. Show them pictures of your office and pictures of yourself to make the experience more personal. This is a marketing strategy that works no matter what you are selling. Since people aren’t meeting you in person, the personalization will do the ‘talking’ for you, making a customer more comfortable with you.

Try adding a blog to your website that will introduce the kind of person you are and what you are capable of helping a customer with. Or you might want to include a video of yourself talking about your product or a personal story that relates to your product. The internet can be such an impersonal place, so try to connect with your customer more.

Using Google AdWords to Your Advantage

by Jim Spence

There are many different people across the Internet who will tell you their secrets to efficiently using Google AdWords. Many/Most are not well informed as to the methods and rules that Google uses to administer their Pay Per Click AdWords Program.

By knowing how to collect appropriate Keywords, organize them, study traffic potential and then creating a campaign you have the basis for a successful Google AdWords Campaign.

Once you have organized and the keywords into sub categories, it is time to write your ad.

Once you learn how to write using correct formating the ad will make the difference between a click through rate of .004 and .04. For 1000 clicks the difference is .004 = 4 clicks and .04 = 40 clicks. That is 10 time more clicks!

Once the campaign is up and running and you have some clicks coming in, the secret to NOT WASTING MONEY is to use a system to efficiently adjust pay per click up or down depending on position.

Google has a strange system of offering you a price per click. IF you have a click through rate that is high enough, they will disount your cost. IF the click through rate is not good, they will offer you a rate that is ivery high per click.

To optimize click through rate (CTR) you must have ads that will attract clicks. You can optimize several ads by setting Google Adwords to display the several different ads evenly and then use the one(s) that have the best CTR.

Boilers - Is it Better to Repair or Replace?

by Tal Potishman

All UK homeowners should strive toward energy efficiency. It saves time, money and it helps out the environment, and even the government has begun to show an interest. Building Regulations now have set standards that heating and hot water systems must adhere to. Rising prices and a troubled economy add additional pressure to the situation. Homeowners throughout the UK are finding it more and more challenging to pay the bills.

The dramatic change in climate has increased the importance of attaining energy efficiency. As the number of natural disasters related to climate change increase, the number of concerned citizens also rises. Homeowners are often unsure what they can do. There are several easy changes to the home that can greatly improve its overall efficiency. Ensuring your home has high-efficiency heating and hot water systems is a good way to start. There are several options available to the concerned consumer.

High efficiency condensing technology is one option. When a homeowner is faced with the choice of either replacing or repairing their current system, they are often unsure what to do. If they are educated as to the pros and cons of their decision, the choice becomes much easier. Frequently, the homeowner depends on the installer for crucial decision-making advice. The installer is often the final factor in the process.

The high price of boilers and the required installation forces many consumers to choose repair over replacement. This poor decision can lead to future problems. While it is true that repairs lengthen the life of a boiler, they cannot improve its level of efficiency. A faulty appliance will only end up costing more in the end. The price of repair and the cost of running older boilers is often much higher than the cost of complete system replacement.

If costs don’t seem to be too persuasive perhaps the following statistics will change your mind. UK households produced 21% of the country’s carbon dioxide emission. Hot water and heating systems make up 80% of that emission. Energy efficiency not only lower bills but also helps the UK to reach its goal of decreasing carbon emissions by the year 2010. Heating and hot water contributes to the majority of the average fuel bill. The use of high efficiency boilers can reduce bills by 30% and save the average home 200 per year.

There are a number of UK companies the produce heating and hot water systems of various makes and models. Important features to look for include cast aluminium-silicon heat exchanger, brass waterset, efficient pump, and a concealed system connection that increases system performance. Installation can be made quick and easy with models that contain a centrally located telescopic flue kit with preformed connections and pre-fitted mains electrical lead. Drop-down controls and spacious interiors make servicing the system easy. Radio frequency, RF, controller versions and a variety of warranty plans are available for the consumer.
